Two Weeks on the Road
with Andrew Cohen
Nights 3-5: Unfulfilled Desires
plays in London
by Tom Huston
Now, in all honesty it should be noted that over the course of a few days during
his stay in the UK, Andrew would leave the teaching hall each evening and venture
out to some local London nightclubs. Why? Well, like I said at the beginning
of this post, being a spiritual teacher is a rather stressful and relatively
thankless occupation … No, actually, Andrew hit the London clubs
to bust out his drumsticks and rock the night away—transmitting the message
of freedom-here-and-now through an entirely different medium.
Unfulfilled Desires,
Andrew’s avant-garde jazz-fusion band, played to three packed houses at the Caernarvon
Castle club in Camden Town, the Vortex Jazz Club, and a place called the Vibe
Bar in London’s East End. According to a friend of mine, Faheem Nusrat,
who attended the gigs: “The owner of the Camden club was in ecstasy from
the music and went as far as to say that the Jazz Café down the road would
be jealous if they knew what was happening. He said that the Caernarvon Castle
rarely gets to taste such high quality music, and he allowed the band to play
past curfew, which he said he NEVER allows.” What’s more, the owner
and manager of the Vortex Jazz Club, a guy named Oliver, likened Unfulfilled
Desires’ sound to “Steps Ahead and Miles Davis brought into the 21st century!”
