Woman: A Cultural, Philosophical, and Spiritual ExplorationThe Spirit of Woman: Three Teleconferences on Women’s Spiritual History in the West

What Is Enlightenment? NEW teleconference with with WIE’s Senior Editor, Dr. Elizabeth Debold

Three Saturdays at 12pm: Aug 18, Sept 8, Sept 22 - 2007
Online Registration

The Spirit of Women: Teleconference callsFor most of us, women and men alike, women’s role in history is vague at best. A few key figures from the past—Cleopatra, a parade of queens, Betsy Ross, Florence Nightingale, perhaps Mary Wollstonecraft—and the adage “behind every great man, there’s a great woman” is about all we know. But if we want to deeply understand who we are, female or male, knowing more about women’s history is essential. In this series of teleconferences, feminist theorist, author, and WIE Senior Editor Elizabeth Debold will present an overview of women’s revolutionary spiritual past in order to illuminate the direction for our collective future.

Martyrs & Mystics: The True First Wave of Women’s Liberation

Saturday, August 18th, 12 noon
Women’s passion for freedom didn’t start in the last 150 years. Women were a force for change in consciousness and culture from the beginning of the Christian Era. How many of us realize that, if women hadn’t responded so passionately to Christ’s message, we actually might not be here? In this presentation, followed by Q&A with participants, Debold will look at the birth of Western civilization in a way that shatters commonly held beliefs about women’s victimization in patriarchal culture.

Rebels & Revolutionaries: Women’s Spiritual Search for Social Justice

Saturday, September 8th, 12 noon
The movements for women’s suffrage and for social liberation that began in the 19 th century weren’t simply secular. They were inspired by a deeply spiritual conviction that inspired women to break taboos and to agitate for equality. Debold will offer a new way to view these social justice movements that reveals the revolutionary spiritual heart that is always needed to create radical cultural change. Includes Q&A with participants.

Beyond the Divine Feminine: Why There is No Goddess in Our Future

Saturday, September 22nd , 12 noon
Is the Goddess on the rise? Does the Feminine Face of the Divine need to emerge to balance the ills of our hypermasculine culture? In our postmodern culture where women at the leading edge have achieved social equality with men, there is a very popular belief that, largely through women, a feminine spiritual force will transform our culture. This idea is rooted in Jung’s ideas of the archetypes and new interpretations of a goddess-centered prehistorical period. In this teleconference, Debold will explore how the very notions of masculine and feminine have been constructed over the past few centuries.

Attend one or all three calls. $15 each or $40 for all three. The call will consist of a presentation for about an hour followed by Q&A.
